What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy designed to alleviate emotional and psychological distress that has resulted from traumatic experiences and memories. The goal of EMDR therapy is not to erase the past but to change the emotional impact it has on one's life, which helps the brain to recognize that the danger has passed and no longer needs to be re-experienced in the present. The technique involves recalling traumatic events in a calm body state while simultaneously focusing on bilateral stimulation (which involves side-to-side eye movements, taps, or sounds). This process helps the brain reprocess memories, much like how the brain consolidates memories in REM sleep, and effectively reduces their emotional intensity over time.As an EMDR trained therapist, I often integrate this approach to assist clients in processing and healing emotional distress associated with the lingering effects of traumatic experiences. It can be especially helpful for those experiencing symptoms they have trouble describing or would rather not go into deep detail about, as this therapy technique does not rely on traditional talk therapy methods.EMDR therapy is just as effective via telehealth as it is in-person. I'd be happy to talk with you more about whether EMDR is right for you and to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Click here to reach out.
EMDR could be right for you if you've experienced:
Recent or past traumatic events
Childhood trauma (such as neglect or abuse)
Unhealthy behavior patterns to cope with stress
Phobias/fears you want to overcome
Toxic relationships on repeat
Alternative forms of therapy that haven't worked
EMDR has been found to be helpful to treat a variety of concerns, such as:
Generalized/Social Anxiety
Trauma (PTSD and Complex-PTSD)
Phobias and fears
Depression
Grief and loss
Low self-esteem
